Mission

The Next Square Deal is a working civic-policy publication about the foundations that help people direct their own lives, the limits that keep concentrated institutions accountable, and the stewardship one generation owes the next.

Its mission is to make a broad public framework specific enough to examine. That means separating values from mechanisms, proposals from existing law, and confidence from evidence still being gathered.

Why the Square Deal framing

“A square deal” is plain language for fair treatment under common rules. Theodore Roosevelt’s program made corporate power, consumer protection, and conservation part of a national reform argument. The phrase is useful; the era is not an instruction manual.

Earlier reforms delivered achievements alongside racial exclusion, unequal citizenship, gender hierarchy, administrative discrimination, civil-liberties conflicts, and failures of democratic inclusion. Historical inspiration here means examining what traveled well, what caused harm, and what a modern framework must do differently.

Why public guarantees

A guarantee names an outcome worth organizing institutions around without pretending one policy is the only path. It makes the public purpose visible while leaving room to compare federal and state law, local services, social insurance, regulation, markets, labor institutions, private organizations, and community action.

The word does not mean every item is judicially enforceable. Unless a page says otherwise, these are proposed public commitments, not federal constitutional rights.

Commitment to evidence and historical honesty

Source type, role, verification status, access date, and limitations travel with the material. Critical evidence belongs beside supportive evidence. Government data is not automatically causal proof; an advocacy report is not disguised as neutral; a presidential speech is not treated as enacted law.

Material revisions should be explained, dated, and preserved in a compact change record. Factual errors should be corrected plainly rather than silently replaced.

Current project stage

The project is in an early working stage. The publication structure and first framework are public-ready, while many guarantee pages still require deeper jurisdiction-specific legal surveys, peer-reviewed evidence, critical literature, and expert review. “Working draft” is an editorial status—not a claim that a broken interface is acceptable.
